Acreage Landscaping Ideas to Increase Property Value

Whether you have a small scale property or a larger scale hobby farm, this blog post is going to walk you through some of the most versatile ways to increase your property value from the outside. Nothing says pride of ownership like a well-maintained property.
Follow along with this post for some of the simplest tricks to help your acreage reach its full potential!
Edging Your Flower Beds
Edging your beds does exactly that– creates a BOLD statement that screams… I love my home and want it to shine! Specifically for those that have beds surrounding trees on their lawn area of framing the features of the home, edging will showcase these elements of the home and the land surrounding it. For rural homes and farm houses in particular, it brings out the features of the landscape.
While it can mean some manual labour, it is relatively easy and can be done quickly if you have a pre-existing flower bed. The best way to edge your garden is to start with a strong base. We recommend that you mow your lawn surrounding the flower beds and ensure that you have taken care of any overgrowth around the existing beds.
Once you have created your rough lines, either in your head or by pushing down the shovel/tool you are using slightly into the ground, you can begin to cut out the shape by removing the existing soil. Then, you will begin to see your garden or flower bed take its full shape.
In our opinion, edging your flower beds is one of the most overlooked ways to increase curb appeal and the reason being is that it doesn’t add anything in, instead, it takes things away. As a result however, you are left with clean lines that accentuate your home’s exterior features.
Incorporating Hanging Planters
Hanging planters look fantastic on porches, patios, hanging off the sides of the home or on the garage. They are an easy way to increase curb appeal and draw attention to various elements of the house. For instance, if you have redone your garage doors or painted your front door a fun accent colour, incorporating a blooming hanging plant will already draw your attention towards that area of the property, making the buyer more likely to notice the key features near it! Hanging planters are also very low maintenance.
The majority of hanging flowers require minimal dead-ending one or two times a week to help improve longevity and do best with water every other day. This kind of landscaping looks particularly charming on modern farm homes and or homes which feature a wrap-around porch/patio spaces. Nothing says I’M HOME! Like an endearing porch with hanging flower baskets between or on the posts.
For those who might not have the greenest thumb but still want their house to shine, this is a great, time-effective option to create a sense of strong curb appeal and pride of ownership.
Weed Whacking Your Backyard
Weed whacking is a KEY part of managing your front, side and or backyard! This is KEY particularly in the early spring months, when dandelions and common yard weeds begin to sprout. If you live on a property, such as a Hobby Farm, Horse Farm or an Estate Home set on acreage, you will find that weeds seem to be an ongoing issue if left unattended.
More Expensive Option: Purchasing a Powered Weed Wacker– this is the best option for those who have walkways and garden beds that require a lot of edging and precision work. It is also great for those who have lengthy curbs or driveways that line up with the parameters of the yard.
If you are sitting on a decent amount of acreage, you will find that POWER TOOLS are your best friend and help get the job done smoothly in half the time!
More Affordable: A Manually Powered Weed Puller– Manually powered weed pullers will feel like your BEST FRIEND, and will save you from having to bend down and pull them out yourself. They are designed with a claw-like contraption that grabs the weed underground by its roots and pulls it out entirely to prevent the chances of re-growth. However, the only downside to this is that it does leave a small hole in the ground.
Most Affordable: Gardening Shovel and Claw Tools- These types of hand held tools can be used to grab hold of the weed and remove it from as close to the root as possible. This method is as full-proof as those listed before, just more time costly!
Mulching Gardens & Flower Beds
Mulch is an easy solution that takes your garden up a notch! When preparing to sell a home, your gardens are equally as important as your lawn. Gardening is a sign that the homeowner loves their space and takes good care of it through and through. Mulch lasts throughout the entire season and can be installed easily by hand, using gardening gloves and small shovels and tools to evenly distribute.
Mulch is also available in a variety of tones ranging from light to dark browns, auburn/red tones and black. When choosing your mulch, think about the colour of your garage, windows, front door and sides of your home. Homes with lighter contrast tones tend to pop with darker coloured beds, while homes with darker tones such as grey and black, tend to shine with mid-dark brown colours as a contrasting feature.
Mulch is available at most local landscape retailers. However, if mulch seems like too much of a hassle in the process of listing, another great alternative is patting down the existing soil and planting small seasonal flowers to help create an element of visual appeal. This will help cover up your existing flower beds and create a fun pop of colour!

Watering Your Grass
It may sound funny… but watering your grass IS a thing! Most commonly, lawns are watered by a sprinkler or sprinkler system. A more affordable alternative is a universal hose-compatible sprinkler which lies out in the middle of the lawn and creates a crescent-like shape that evenly distributes the water across the ground. Leaving your sprinkler to run for 1-3 hours will ensure that the grounds are soaked enough for the grass to continue to flourish, particularly in dry and hot months.
If you are experiencing patchy growth, consider watering a specific area of your lawn to ensure that it catches up to the healthy patches beside it. There are many “miracle growth” solutions available too, to help promote healthy lawn growth, which can be found on sites such as Lee Valley, Amazon, Walmart and Canadian Tire!
If you have kids, consider a sprinkler day in their swimsuits! What’s better on a hot day than keeping your kiddos occupied while also allowing your garden to flourish?
Keeping On Top Of Regular Trims
Nothing says “put together” like a freshly cut lawn. Your outdoor space is almost as important as the space inside your home for many potential buyers. Think about families with young kids, looking for a safe place for them to play or couples with dogs and other animals who need the yard space to play. Your lawn is ultimately the first impression of your home.
When you take care of these outdoor spaces, it shows more than curb appeal, but a pride of ownership. If you saw a well-maintained home on the outside, your natural assumption would be that this same meticulous care is reflected on the interior of the home.
More to that, when you truly care for your lawn, it reduces the chances of it growing unevenly. With the summer temperatures, it is essential to care for your outdoor spaces because, with any lack of rain, lawns can experience intermittent growth and various dried spots. Ensuring that you are cutting your lawn every 1-2 weeks will help maintain its ongoing health and introduce a steady growth cycle.
