5 Reasons to Move to Fergus

Exploring Fergus

Fergus is a town that our agents have the privilege of calling home. Georgia will be the first to tell you all about the beautiful, historic, and quaint small town that invites you home. Many locals know Fergus has its own unique identity, offering an exceptional living experience in and off itself. Between its local eats, shops, parks and quiet family-friendly neighbourhoods, at Capstone, we see Fergus as a local hidden gem!

As much as moving to a new town can seem like a huge step, we want to assure you that Fergus will soon feel like home. Being a part of a close-knit community, where neighborhood families attend the same schools and kids grow up on the same sports team together, is truly something special to hold onto. If we haven’t already convinced you that Fergus is the place to be, then follow us through our agents five reasons why we would love to show you the potential of living here.

1. Location, Location, Location!

Fergus is becoming increasingly popular for its desirable location, which makes sense because it is proximate to Elora and Guelph. If you have plans of commuting or need to access some of the surrounding areas, enjoy being a short drive from Puslinch, Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge. A lot of times our clients worry about the limitations that living in smaller, rural centered towns places on their lifestyle needs. The best part about Fergus is that you have the small-town feel you desire, without having to sacrifice your distance from things like: Golf Courses, Rec Centres, Clinics, Hospitals, Schools, Job Opportunities, etc. If something you need access to is not within Fergus, there is a extremely high chance it will be available in Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge, which are all under a 45 minute drive away.

Now you are likely wondering what Fergus has to offer within the town… Good news for you, Fergus has its own infrastructure: grocery stores, a hospital, and a local fire department. Presently, Fergus is also undergoing an expansion across Highway-6 that is planned to push the community further into the rural areas. The ongoing plans include a proposed urban boundary expansion and the development of Fergus’ Business Park, providing a landscape for more housing, business spaces and gathering areas.

2. Natural Scenery & Outdoor Activities

Fergus has some of the best scenic parks, trails and streets. With one of our agents Georgia, moved to Fergus, one of the things she found joy in was walking on local trails, allowing her to explore her new community by foot. Fergus has an interesting mix of rural homes along the side roads surrounding the town and then more suburbian-like neighborhoods filled with growing families. Yet, the overall landscape of rolling fields and century old farms surrounding it all is ideal for nature lovers.

If you are moving from Toronto or a more urban city such as Waterloo, Hamilton, Milton or Mississauga, Fergus will be a breathe of fresh air that invites you to slow down. When our agents have toured buyers, they often comment on the size of the lots in comparison to the smaller lots which you find in urban cities. Detached homes are often backing onto green spaces, walking trails and when they are facing other homes, there is enough space to give you a sense of separation. If you think about this in comparison to the average residential homes in Toronto, where neighbors are close and lot size is limited due to the value of land, Fergus gives you the home you want with the space to call you own.

Parks To Explore On Your Next Visit

Templin Gardens

Step into a stunning riverside walk that will leave you with a peaceful, easy feeling. Templin Gardens is a well-known trail for locals and visitors alike. The stunning water views of the Grand River as it passes through the town, create an unmatched ambiance. This trail invites you to explore the stone architecture that bathes the city in its rich history. Beyond walking, Templin Gardens is a beautiful spot to take wedding photos, graduation photos and capture other special memories. If you only have time to visit one spot in Fergus we recommend taking a detour from the downtown core and exploring the history and nature of the gardens surrounding you.

Gibbons Drive Park

If you are a family with little ones looking for an outdoor activity, then this will be perfect for you! In 2019, Gibbons park was one of four parks in Fergus that got remodelled entirely. Home to a colourful play structure, separate swing sets (for all ages), a rockwall, monkey bars and various interactive elements, your kids will love to explore all of the different equipment. Gibbons Park is surrounded by mature treelines and grassy areas, if you have time, we recommend bringing a blanket and some kids activities or sandwiches and sharing this time outdoors.

The Fergus Cascades

The Fergus Cascades are a series of small waterfalls that run through the duration of the Grand River as it passes through the town. There are various vantage points in which you can enjoy the riverside ambiance of the water as it flows downstream. If you follow the Cascades, you will encounter a local passage called the River Walk, a small trail that takes you down the River’s edge for a scenic walk straight to the Templin Gardens. If you have a pair of hiking boots and an urge to explore the outdoors, then this is the perfect starting point to see if Fergus is the right town for you and your family.

3. Fergus’ Close Knit Community

Fergus is best known for its strong sense of community and this comes from the founding roots of Fergus. Deeply rooted in its Scottish heritage, Fergus is one of those towns where you settle your family for generations to come. Scottish outlooks on the meaning of family and community focus on a clan system, centered on extended kinship. Families and communities are held together by a strong and unique sense of identity rooted in togetherness. Fergus’ Scottish roots are still equally applicable to the kind of community life you can expect from a small town.

You are sure to be surrounded by friendly neighbours, plenty of smiling faces and will always have a helping hand around the corner. Whether you are new to the community or branching out to make new friends, Fergus will provide you the chance to be close to those living among you and experience a sense of small-town community that is unique to it’s roots.

4. Fergus Events & Festivals

Fergus also has prominent community events and festivals that keep neighbours connected ~ Meadows Music Festival, which happens each summer, brings many community members out to socialize and enjoy local craft beer and talented musicians in the area. Each year our team members have attended this social event and commented on the smiling faces and warm atmosphere it fosters. At this past years local and mainstream artists have been in attendance creating an exciting buzz throughout the community. Enjoy food trucks, a drinks stand, room to dance or set up your lawn chairs and enjoy the live performances.

One of our local favourite is the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games, which happens every summer and celebrates the community’s deep history of Scottish culture. It has traditional dressings, food, dancing, music, and more. If you are considering what life would be like in Fergus and want a true taste of the community, this is a great chance to explore the town and enjoy the summer weather!

Other events include workshops, local showcases for artisans and businesses, and community-run fundraisers/recreational centre events. For young families, working professionals or those looking to slow down the pace of their lives, Fergus will surely welcome all of your lifestyle needs with open arms. The majority of these events are advertised in the local Wellington Advertiser and can be found on Instagram and the Centre Wellington website. If you are interested in following along with local events in Centre Wellington, follow us on Instagram @CapstoneREPS for information about the latest events and fundraisers!

5. The Price is Right

If you are coming from a larger city within the GTA, the first thing you are more than likely to notice is the stark difference in the market. While Fergus is growing, it’s demands are nowhere near close to the major parts of Toronto. For families, new-retirees and working professionals, your money is going to go further for you in Fergus then it will in some of the surrounding cities in the area, making getting in detached homes/ upsizing much easier. If you are still working, explore the connectivity to Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge and Guelph, which are a short driving distance away. At Capstone, we are committed to finding the right community for your budget. We want you to get the most out of your home and this begins by finding a place that feels right for you.
