Keep Your Home Cool All Summer Long!
No matter how much we enjoy spending time outdoors during our short summers, we always want our homes to be as comfortable as possible. This often means having air conditioning to have a cool place to escape from the heat. But even with an air conditioner, this can be tricky during the hottest days of the year.
Here are some tips to create a more pleasant indoor environment for your family and guests:
Simplify your cooking. When the weather is gorgeous out, who wants to be in the kitchen making big, time-consuming meals? Keep temperatures down by preparing meals that don’t need to be cooked in the oven. Think about barbecuing instead of using the stove top. This simple tip is bound to help keep your house cool during the hottest days of summer.
Do It Yourself shade. If you live in a house, plant trees on the side where the sun hits the house during the hottest part of the day. Tree-shaded spots can be as much as 5ºC cooler than the surrounding area. By planting trees, you can enhance your curb appeal and keep your home cool during the summer.
Work with your windows. Paying attention to what’s going on outside can make a big difference if you adjust your windows and coverings accordingly. Block the sun by closing awnings, curtains or blinds during the day. Open your windows at night to make use of the cool air and night time breeze.
Fine tune your air conditioning. If you have an air conditioner, make sure it works properly before the hot weather starts. Try to pre-program the air conditioner to adjust to your person preference. If you open the windows at night, you may want the air conditioner to turn off at night and be turned on again in the morning. Not only will you keep your house comfortable with this simple tip, but you will also save money and be more energy efficient.
