This week is National Volunteer Week. We all know that fitting volunteering into our schedules is easier said than done, but it truly is a rewarding way of being an engaged citizen. Check out this list of just some of the ways volunteering matters in your community and throughout the world:

Support good causes. This is perhaps the most obvious benefit of volunteering, but it should not be understated. The world is full of serious problems, and people dedicated to service can make real change. Many times, non-profits rely on volunteers because they can then use funding to directly help the cause. Pick a few things that are close to your heart or that you are passionate about and help out in that area. Whether it animals, children, food, or homelessness, the list goes on and all areas can benefit from your help!

Build community. In this modern age, our communities can extend beyond the people we live near. While volunteering can strengthen bonds in a neighbourhood, it can also create global networks of people with shared concerns. You may find others who are passionate about the same causes that you are and the relationships that are built volunteering can last a life time. Guelph has many different non-profits and charitable groups that work together within the community to do good.

Inspire others. Dedicated volunteers are role models to the people around them. The selfless nature of doing charitable works inspires others to give back. We have all received help in our lives, so it's important to share the love. Volunteering is contagious and we all have the power to inspire others to give back.

“How can I get involved?”

This may be a question that you are asking yourself now or have asked yourself before. There are many ways to get involved. In Guelph, The People and Information Network (PIN) is a great resource to find different non-profits to volunteer with. The great thing about the PIN website is that you can specify whether you want a one-time, short-term, or long-term volunteer position and you can also decide what cause you would like to support.

How can you help today? Support National Volunteer Week by signing up to volunteer somewhere that means a lot to you and quickly see the benefits that volunteering has on both you and others!
