With Labour Day weekend here and the beautiful sunny weather sticking around, you might decide you need a little cooling off or a nice afternoon with the kids and/or the whole family! Nothing does it better than a frosty treat!

Whether you like yours modern or old school, there are lots of options. And frankly, if you were to ask five people for their favourite spot, you’d likely get five different answers.

So, in no particular order, here are five of the best ice cream/gelato/frozen yogurt shops in the area to tempt your sweet tooth.

#1 The Boathouse Tea Room

It’s ice cream season until roughly the end of September at The Boathouse, which is touted as having the best ice cream in Guelph.

Where: 116 Gordon St., Guelph
Known for: Huge servings of Shaw’s ice cream on waffle cones, with 33 flavours.
Don’t miss: Watermleon Sherbert, their most popular flavour and a canoe or kayak rental while you’re there.

#2 Menchie’s

This frozen yogurt chain has been gaining ground as a favourite spot. With treats sold by weight, there are gluten-free and vegan options among their custom blends, and all are Kosher-certified.

Where: 292 Stone Rd. W., Guelph
Known for: A dizzying array of non-fat, low-fat, specialty and other flavours.
Don’t miss: For creamy decadence, try the Nutella flavour.

#3 Sweet Distractions

Specializing in gourmet ice cream and gelato, Sweet Distractions is one of those little gems that are wonderful to stumble across.

Where: 16 Mill St. W., Elora
Known for: Hand-crafted sweet treats.
Don’t miss: Pistachio gelato or cookies and cream – offering a smooth and creamy consistency.

#4 Indulge

With 25 flavours to choose from, there’s something for everyone.

Where: 10 Queen St. E. or 301 Water St. S., Cambridge

Don’t miss: Chocolate peanut butter is a top seller.
